Major Moves and

 Techniques Described

Escape from front strangles

1st front strangle

Step back with left leg, left hand covers head against possible head butt, right hand comes up to opponents left elbow.

Left hand moves across and reinforces right hand, pull opponents arm across body, simultaneously left knee into opponent’s body.

Finish with a right hook punch which transitions into a right elbow to opponent’s face.

2nd front strangle

Long step back with left leg, left hand covers head against possible head butt; right hand performs a inner forearm block/strike to throw off opponent’s arms; (strike about ⅓ of the way up his forearm). With same hand perform a back fist to face.

Additional notes

Put a twisting snap into inner forearm block/strike. When stepping back stay face on. Change your stance and weight distribution to strengthen block and then again to strike.

3rd front strangle

Step back with left leg, left hand covers head against possible head butt, right hand punches to solar plexus. Right hand drives opponent’s chin up and back, left hand holds his right arm near elbow. Right hand goes over his right hand and takes a meridian pressure point hold. Twist hand, step back and lock out his arm. Step into a shoulder lock. Change stance to enable knee strike to body and push away.

Additional notes

Stay face on at initial stage of technique. Try and put on a semi arm lock as transitioning into meridian pressure point hold; this may give better control.

4th front strangle

Step back with left leg, drive up both hands inside opponent’s to break hold. Double open handed strike to his ears, grab ears and pull down into a right knee strike.

Additional notes

A larger step back should help unbalance opponent more.

Escape from rear strangles

1st rear strangle

Simply back kick to opponent’s knee.

Additional notes

Drop centre of gravity slightly to improve stability before kick. Look over shoulder to see target, use peripheral vision.

Questions

Step back or forward into stance?

2nd rear strangle

Step forward with right leg, left elbow drives back over opponent’s arms. Wrap up his arms into lock, punch with right hand to face, follow through with elbow strike to face.

Additional notes

When stepping forward, place right foot in line with left. This both helps break hold, and will strengthen left elbow technique.

When wrapping his arms up into a lock, aim to cross his arms

3rd rear strangle

Step back with left leg; reinforce a right elbow strike to opponent’s solar plexus. Back fist with right hand to his face, at the same time cover own face with left hand. Apply a shoulder arm lock.

Additional notes

When stepping back, step at an angle to align elbow strike to middle of his body, (solar plexus).

4th rear strangle

Step back with left leg; right hammer hand strike to opponent’s groin, cover own face against possible head butt with left hand. Body drop, finish with 3 strike finish, (back fist to groin, back fist to face, punch/hammer to ribs).

Additional notes

When stepping back, step at an angle to align elbow strike to middle of his body.

Arm lock (both sides)

Block opponent’s right upper cut with a downward left arm block. Take hold of his right wrist with your right hand. Keeping hold of his wrist, turn around and elbow him in the face (with left). Put your left arm under his right, and apply arm lock.

Additional notes

Pull his arm to facilitate turn and strike. Try to create smooth fluid action.

Left forearm blade just above his elbow joint.

Apply good twist to the arm to which you are applying the lock

With left hand take a hold high on your own lapel

Shoulder lock (both sides)

Block opponent’s right upper cut, with a down left hand gedan-barai block. Palm heel strike to face. Turn his striking arm up and around, apply simultaneous pressure to back of neck with right hand. Turn opponent into a shoulder lock. Change stance to enable knee strike to body, push opponent away.

Additional notes

2- Way action is important.

Make sure that as you turn his arm into position you also turn your body so that it is side on.

Apply pressure to upper arm/shoulder area when lock is on.

Hip throw with figure four wrist lock

Hip throw. After your opponent drops, apply figure four wrist lock. Knees rest on neck and ribs.

Additional notes

2- Way action is important, i.e. pull with hands and push with knees.

Keep the lock tight.

Recumbent ankle throw

Opponent throws a straight right, move to left and parry with your right hand. Take hold of his right wrist with your right hand, left step forward placing your foot between his feet. Drop back onto ground (left side break fall) keeping hold and kick to body with right foot. Hook left foot around his left ankle; break his knee with right foot side kick. Turn to face away kick to groin and roll out.

Additional notes

Alternative is to kick other knee instead of body

Escape from hair grabs (2)

1st escape from hair grab

Right kick to his right shin. Right hand goes over his right hand and takes a meridian pressure point hold. Twist hand, step back and lock out his arm. Step into a shoulder lock. Change stance, knee strike to body and push away

2nd escape from hair grab

Right kick to his right shin. Place thumbs of both hands on top of his hand and take hold. Move hands forward mapping out a positive parabolic curve, simultaneously step forward with right leg placing it to the outside of his right leg. Turn anticlockwise into lock. Finish with right punch to ribs.

Additional notes

When locked his elbow should be held high, his locked hand is turned in a horizontal plane to apply pain.

His locked hand is gripped around the small and ring finger, thumb applies pressure where exactly?

Shoulder arm lock (2)

1st shoulder arm lock

Block opponent’s right hook. Wrap your left arm around his right arm and take hold of your right forearm close to wrist. Right hand pushes opponent’s right shoulder. Lean your upper body back. Apply shoulder lock. Block opponent’s left punch with your right hand, right punch transition into elbow strike to face.

Additional notes

  • ·         Arch your back and push with right hand on pressure point on his shoulder
  • ·         Aim to turn your right hand over his shoulder to raise left arm and thereby apply more pressure
  • ·         There is a pressure point on the shoulder which your right hand should be pushing
  • ·         Keep your own left shoulder down to maximise leverage
  • ·         Your left arm should be applying pressure at humerus (ulnar nerve), use blade of forearm
  • ·         Use small of the wrist when wrapping your left arm around his right arm together with sticking control (small circle jujitsu)

2nd shoulder arm lock

Block opponent’s right hook. Wrap your left arm around his right arm and take hold of your right forearm close to wrist. Right hand pushes opponent’s right shoulder. Apply shoulder lock. Place right leg to back of opponent and perform take down.

  • ·         Your left arm should be applying pressure at humerus (ulnar nerve)
  • ·         Use small of the wrist when wrapping your left arm around his right arm together with sticking control (small circle jujitsu).
  • ·         NB Rob teaches a large wrapping movement to the upper part of the arm

Arm Locks from a standing position (3)

1st arm lock from a standing position

Opponent throws an overhand right hand strike, step forward and block with rising right arm block. Strike with left palm hook to his face while keeping his striking arm up. Take hold of the wrist of his striking arm with your right hand, take hold of your own right wrist with your left hand and force him back and down to the ground, (step forward when doing this).  On the ground push his elbow back so that his forearm lies flat of the ground. Hold his arm in place with your left hand and strike to finish with your right fist.

2nd arm lock from a standing position

Step in to double block a right hook. Chop his elbow with your right hand to create a V shape. Take hold of his right wrist with your right hand maintaining V shape. Right arm slips behind his right arm and takes hold of your left wrist. Bend back his arm and thereby force him to the ground. Apply key lock.

Additional notes

This would never work as taught in class, to make this work apply a 2-way simultaneous push/pull with left/right hands respectively. This adaptation actually works very well. After double handed block (which must be forceful enough to stun his arm), your left hand/forearm pushes his forearm out, the edge of your right hand pulls his elbow in, use ‘sticky hands’ concept. Then quickly snake right hand around to grab his wrist. etc

3rd arm lock from a standing position

Block opponent’s right upper cut with a down left hand (gedan-barai) block. Take hold of his right wrist with your right hand. Keeping hold of his wrist, spin clockwise and back elbow him in the face (with left arm). Block his left hand punch with your left arm, take hold and bring his left arm to your body, place his right arm over his left and apply lock by levering his right arm over his left.

Arm break and take down

Description

Start front a front ready stance. Parry straight left punch with outside edge of right hand (move slightly to left). Take hold of hand and break over right shoulder (need to turn your body so that you have your back to him). Lift arm and turn, take his elbow up and take him down backwards. Push his arm back into lock on the floor.

Additional notes

Use a bong sau movement with your left arm to control his right elbow through pain. This controls opponent through transition to arm break.

Duck your head slightly when moving his right arm onto your right shoulder.

Wrist Locks (6)

NB After placing your hand on his, start all of these techniques with a kick to the shin

1st wrist lock

His right hand takes hold of your right wrist. Put your left hand on top of his holding hand. Move your right hand in a clockwise small circle and drop him to his knees.

Additional notes

If you flex your wrist outwards it will reduce the strength of his grip. This will ease the clockwise movement that you make with your hand. (Wally Jay)

2nd wrist lock

Same but use your left elbow to push his right arm down. Step forward slightly with left leg to reinforce your left elbow.

3rd wrist lock

Right hand lapel grab. Your right hand goes over his hand and takes a meridian hold. Turn his hand so that his little finger is pointing up. Take hold with the other hand as well and lever to drop him to his knees.

Additional notes

Try to create an S shape with his elbow and wrist for maximum effect

Your thumb applies pressure to his hand between the web of his thumb and his index finger. The small finger end of your hand applies pressure to his wrist.

Your other hand can either reinforce your right hand or apply downward pressure just above his wrist.

You can use your chest as a base

4th wrist lock

First part same as 3rd lock but instead pull his right elbow forwards, then apply pressure to his elbow to drop him.

5th wrist lock

First part same as 3rd lock but instead step back with right leg and apply pressure to his tricep to drop him so that you can apply an arm lock with your knee placed on the back of his shoulder.

6th wrist lock

Take a hold of his hand so that his palm is facing up. Take a hold of his hand so that both of your thumbs are the back of his hand. Turn his hand forward and out to force him down to the ground.  Place his palm on the ground and strike elbow.

Additional notes

I think if you take his wrist towards your knee it may be more effective.

Wrist lock with a throw

Parry straight punch with outside of right ridge hand, at the same time step to the left, keep hold of his wrist. Throw a right round leg mawashi kick to his ribs/solar plexus; land the kicking leg back in front of the opponent, (square on). Take a hold of his hand so that his palm is facing up. Take a hold of his hand so that both of your thumbs are the back of his hand. Turn his hand forward and out to force him down to the ground.  Place his palm on the ground and strike elbow.

Breaking ground strangles

your hips up so that he falls forwards over you. Turn him over and strike to finish.

1st break of ground strangle

Opponent is kneeling behind your head and strangling. Raise your hands so that they are between his arms, strike his arms to make them bend and clap his ears. Grab his ears and turn him onto his back. Come up onto your knees so that you can perform a hammer strike to his face.

2nd break of ground strangle

Opponent is kneeling on your right side and strangling. Place your left hand on his right hand to hold. Your right hand pushes his right shoulder up to create some extra space between you and him. Your right knee goes under his body, your left leg hooks over his head and forces him back onto the ground. Pull his arm up close to your butt and apply arm bar.

3rd break of ground strangle

Opponent sits astride you and strangles. Take hold of his lapels, raise your knees, and pull him with your hands while suddenly thrusting your hips up. Your opponent will be thrown over you. Turn him and come up onto your knees so that you can perform a hammer strike to his face.

Additional notes

Turn your face to the side when you pull him over so that his body does not land squarely on your face.

Place your left leg to the outside of his right leg and pull towards centre line.

Take hold of his right arm with your left hand and pull towards centre line.

4th break of ground strangle

Opponent sits astride you and strangles. Place your left hand on his left elbow, reinforce with your right hand and pull his arm across to your left. Turn your body onto its left side as you pull. Place his left hand onto the floor as you finish the turn, it should be placed such that pressure can be applied to the elbow to lock it. Punch with right hand to finish.

Additional notes

Place right leg further out to brace for turn.

5th break of ground strangle

Opponent kneels between your legs to strangle you. Wrap your left arm around his right arm and apply a shoulder arm lock. Turn your hips a bit so that you can place the sole of your left foot over his right knee and push away so that he falls to your left. He should fall so that you are still applying a one arm lock to his left arm. Come up and strike to finish.

6th break of ground strangle

Opponent is sitting astride you holding your arms against the ground either side of you. Force your left hand up then suddenly change and push your right instead. This should make your opponent fall to your left. Sit up and strike to finish.

Additional notes

Place your right leg out to the side and push with it to reinforce the right hand push to turn him over.

7th break of ground strangle

Opponent is sitting astride you holding your arms on the ground either side of you. Move your arms down to your sides and thrust

Additional notes

Turn your face to the side that his body does not land squarely on your face.

Grab the fleshy bits around his waist to turn him over.

Place your right leg out to the side and push with it to reinforce turn.

Reclining leg throw

Opponent throws an overhead strike, step forward and block with a rising block.

There are 2 options for the first part: -

1 Take hold of his right ankle with your left hand and place right forearm on his right hip and push.

2 Kneel and put your right hand to the back of his right calf. Take hold of his ankle with your left hand and push with your body so that he falls onto his back.

Elbow to body and back fist to face, then take hold of his right leg, lift it over your head, step on his right hand with your left foot and punch to finish.

Additional notes

Place your right hand on his chest as you lift his leg over

Block right foot kick with double arm block, (lying on your left side). Take hold of his ankle with your left hand and push with your body so that he falls onto his back.

Additional notes

Keep in a foetal position to protect vital areas and face towards your opponent all the time

Use your legs to circle and thereby face opponent

Hip throw with shoulder arm lock

Block right hook and hip throw. Right knee scrapes down opponents back as you kneel down on your right knee. When applying the arm lock the shoulder should be pushed forward so that he cannot pull you over.

Hip throw with cross over arm lock

Block right hook and hip throw. While keeping hold of his right arm with your left hand, right kick to kidneys, left stamp kick to head and left heel kick to face. Place your left foot in front of his face, right side break fall, pull his arm up and over your upper thigh and apply lock.

Apply 2-way pressure to take him down. Tuck his instep into your armpit and apply ankle lock. Right heel applies pressure to the inside of his left thigh.

Additional notes

There’s a tendon that runs down the inside of the thigh, apply pressure to that.

Additional notes

Left hand can be used to reinforce throw by pushing back against the inside of his left leg.

Drawing ankle throw

Against a fully committed right hook, move to the right, block in such a way as to take some of his forward momentum and pull him off balance. Your left foot will go to his right ankle in a tripping action. Your right arm will catch his left arm in an upward pressing motion. The combination of these actions should cause him to trip and fall.

Left palm heel strike to the right of his jaw, use the same hand to chop back to the left side of his neck immediately followed by an open right hand strike to collar bone and then a left straight palm to front of face.

Right open hand parry to straight punch, take hold of hand and break with left palm to elbow. Shuffle forward on left foot as you pull his right arm with your left hand. Right hand needs to go under his right and up to palm strike his jaw upwards. Left open hand hits to below left ear from back/side and right hand strikes to front of neck in the same fashion (palm down – thumb side). Left hand wraps around jaw from behind, right hand pulls right arm back, drop opponent to rest on your knee and then finish with a right chop to collar bone from behind.

Basic technique analysis

Hip throw

Block right hook with left hand. As you step forwards to block, your left foot is placed inside of his right foot. Simultaneously punch with right fist to stun opponent. Take hold of his right arm just above elbow with your left hand. Spin on your right foot; bring left foot in parallel to right foot.

Pull his right arm tight into and around your own body. Take hold of his body just above his waist with your right arm. Hold body in tight. Lean slightly forwards, (this keeps opponent off balance, and helps throw).

Knees bent, hip positioned past his centreline, lifting hip motion + pull throws opponent.

Try and combine all the pulling and throwing elements into one smooth action.

Body drop

Block right hook with left hand. As you step forwards to block, your left foot is placed outside of his right foot. Simultaneously punch with right fist to stun opponent. Take hold of his right arm just above elbow with your left hand. Switch leg positions as you turn your back to him; right calf should be bent as it goes over his right chin. Take hold of his body just above his waist with your right arm. Straighten your right leg (heel to ground) and pull his right arm tight into and around your own body, pull with the arm that is around his waist. Create a window through which to pull opponent.

Try and combine all the pulling and throwing elements into one smooth action.
